Oversimplified accounts have tended to depict the entire controversy as either a liberal intrusion into religious traditions or merely a Savarna feminist attempt to reform the Brahminical Hindu religion. What they overlooked was that these counter-mobilisations represented a widespread expression of yearnings for social justice and outrage against Brahminism.
